provides the setting for Kevin Hoffmann’s book, “Trial and Triumph.”

Hoffmann’s historical fiction novel is a translation from German to English originally published in 1917. It tells the story of a young couple, Walter and Elsie, who are caught in the middle of the bloody conflict. Walter, believing that his fianc?e, Elsie, perished during the battle of New Ulm, enlists in the Union forces, grief-stricken. He is eventually assigned to the front lines in the battle of Gettysburg. He is wounded in battle, caught by enemy forces, and imprisoned even after the fight. With all the fighting going on, little does Walter know that his beloved Elsie is alive and is set on reuniting with him.
